The staff at Carter's Kitchen was rather concerned about patrons

Ramsay already plans to revisit Pantaleone's for a follow-up that will air next season, Pete tells me."We're supposed play soccer when he comes back," Pete smiles. So what was the best part of the whole experience?"To me, as a chef, it was a honor to meet this guy and work with him in the kitchen," Pete says. "It was the thrill of a lifetime, it really was."A small outdoor fire has forced I'On neighborhood favorite Carter's Kitchen to shutter for a few days. Esteemed chef Robert Carter told Eater that the flames were contained to an outdoor deck but destroyed the walk-in refrigerator, several air conditioning units,Cheese&Pizza tools wholesalers a few water heaters and the storage facility. Though the equipment was damaged, no one was injured in the accident. Carter stated that the eatery should reopen in time for Charleston Restaurant Week, starting January 8.

The staff at Carter's Kitchen was rather concerned about patrons with New Year's Eve reservations and to keep the celebration merry, were calling several other Charleston establishments to score the diners a coveted table elsewhere for the holiday. When Michelle and Jon Christy bought their 1980s-era home in North Tustin, Calif.,high quality non-stick knife much of the residence already was remodeled.Except for the kitchen. It was dated. And it was olive green."I wanted to lighten up the kitchen, because the kitchen had been dark," Michelle Christy said. "I thought white cabinets would give it a nice, clean, crisp look."

They didn't stop there. Today, with a demolition behind them, and new Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances along with a spacious island, the couple's kitchen is not just brighter; it also reflects several current trends in culinary design.Nearly half of new homeowners undertaking a home improvement project within three months of buying a residence set their sights on a kitchen overhaul, according to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors. The array of choices for big-ticket appliances to even a simple backsplash can be daunting. But people should consider what will appeal to a broad range of future homebuyers. Even a minor remodel can recoup most of the cost when the owners resell, according to Remodeling magazine's 2013 Cost vs. Value report. The takeaway from all this?

Kitchenware with flare will make your cook smile

If there is a cook on your Christmas shopping list this year, you may already have been perusing the many available gift guides to help you pick the right gift. Of course, you'd love to wrap up the Le Creuset dutch oven or countertop convection oven your cook has been craving and saving for all year, but just because you are generous of spirit doesn't mean you're not short on cash. That's why I have put together a list of a few of my favorite things that will make a big impact under the tree but not on your bank account. If your cook is a master of fresh pasta and has experienced the frustration of trying to create perfectly filled and sealed ravioli with minimal fuss and mess, they will appreciate this best Fruit knife wholesalers. There are many like this on the market that work similarly, but I can recommend this one for ease of use and easy storage.

The cook will need to own a rolling pin and a pasta machine, but once the sheets are rolled out, a dozen delicious hand-crafted ravioli at a time will pop from the mold, ready to go.Is your cook obsessive about the sharpness of their knives?Actually, we should all be, given how dangerous a dull knife can be? Most steels will straighten your knife's edge, but won't actually sharpen it. The diamond coating on this steel will do both. A few swipes on this will give the blade the razor-sharp edge it needs to neatly slice through the skins of the tomatoes at next summer's garden party.Writers get writer's block, cooks get flavor block.

There are some recipes in this book, but it is not a cookbook, rather more a reference guide for flavor matching, recipe creation and menu building. Are you staring at a big head of cauliflower from your CSA and can't think of a single interesting thing to do with it? Did you know that cauliflower loves both mussels and curry? It is a book designed to get the creative culinary juices flowing. A revised and updated version was published in 2008 under the title "The Flavor Bible," and either would be a valuable addition to your cook's library.I can't live without this. I made fortune cookies for the wedding of some friends a couple of years ago and I can safely say there would have been no success without my Silpat. Made of fiberglass coated in silicone, ceramic knife suppliers it can line your baking sheet or sit directly on your oven rack.

Kitchen upgrade at Lafayette's Career Center to help prepare students for culinary careers

There are many factors in egg production, light, housing, diet and health of the chicken. Sunlight once signaled the hen to lay — lack of sunlight in the fall and winter signaled her to cease laying. Now scientifically controlled lights keep chickens producing all the time. The term "pecking order" frequently used to describe status, actually comes from a natural chicken behavior. Chickens especially the light breeds can develop extremely aggressive behaviors. So as a preventive measure some people trim the birds' beaks with a special hot cutting blade which cauterizes the beak. The process is not unlike clipping a dog's nails or trimming a horse's hooves. The hens can still eat and drink.

An old cafeteria is getting a new life as an industrial kitchen and lab space for Lafayette Parish students who are aspiring culinary workers.About $1.5 million in renovations are underway by Rudick Construction to transform the old cafeteria space at the W.D. and Mary Baker Smith Career Center into an industrial kitchen with classrooms, lab space and a café area. The parish school system has had a long-standing program for students interested in culinary careers at the Career Center, housed in a home economics-style classroom space with electric stove ranges found in most home kitchens."Right now, the program is limited because the existing space was never set up to be a cooking kitchen area," said Kyle Bordelon, the school system's facilities planning director. "Once, they move into the new area, they'll have a full commercial-grade kitchen, learning on equipment used in commercial restaurants to give them an advantage in their careers."

Students at the Career Center attend career-focused classes, including cosmetology and carpentry, and become prepared for industry-based certification in their fields of interest.About 24 students are currently enrolled in the Career Center's culinary arts program, said Herb Menard, the program's instructor. The new kitchen and lab space will provide students the level of training their new employers will expect, Menard said."Our business partners want people who have experience with industrial equipment," he said.

5 Tips to Design the Perfect Transitional Kitchen

So while almost everything is up for negotiation when designing a transitional kitchen, here are some of the style's hallmarks, as well as some examples of how I've interpreted the look recently.Perhaps the cornerstone of the style. A transitional kitchen will often feature wood, steel, glass and stone or marble all in the same space. This is a kitchen I designed for a Tribeca loft space; you can see wood cabinets, concrete floors, marble, and stainless steel working together to create a harmonious whole. I wanted the space to reference the building's industrial history, while also maintaining a sense of warmth.A pop of color here or there is certainly welcome, but in general, transitional kitchens feature neutral colors in varying shades. The result is typically a sophisticated, and timeless look. A good example of this is the kitchen I designed for a Florida high-rise, which features different tones of brown in the floor, island, cabinetry, and furnishings.

While transitional kitchens are often subdued when it comes to color, that doesn't mean they're boring at all! Transitional kitchens are often delightful explorations of texture, using everything from interesting tile surfaces to polished or rough stone to provide visual interest.Cabinetry in transitional kitchens tends to keep a low profile. You won't find a lot of intricate carving, or elaborate hardware on transitional cabinetry. What keeps it from looking too modern, is the material: I typically use wood as opposed to glass or lacquer to keep it transitional. This kitchen, which was designed for a Pre-war high-rise, features minimalist cabinetry in a warm rich wood with recessed handles.

I love how the clean lines and the natural material balance each other out, creating an uncluttered but still inviting effect. In the broadest sense, this is the definition of a transitional design. A transitional kitchen borrows elements or references styles of the past and combines them with contemporary features to produce something new and fresh. The beauty of it is that you can decide how you want to mix and match the past and the present so that it's a kitchen truly expressing who you are and how you live!

Creating a New Hero from an Old Story

For decades, immunotherapy seemed a tantalizing—yet maddeningly elusive—alternative to toxic treatments for cancer consisting mainly of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Manipulating the immune system proved to work on certain allergies and microbes, but immunotherapeutic cancer vaccines historically overpromised and underdelivered.

It wasn’t until 2010 when the FDA approved Provenge for prostate cancer that immunotherapy gained status as a true contender for treating cancer. More recently, the realization that tumors require both immune evasion and active immune suppression to proliferate has fueled two successes so tremendous that certain pharmaceutical companies have entirely rebranded themselves as centered on immuno-oncology.

The first triumph involves a class of so-called “checkpoint inhibitor” drugs, including Yervoy and Nivolimumab. These checkpoint inhibitor drugs essentially take the brakes off the antitumor immune response and have generated dramatic clinical results in certain patients with advanced cancer. Cleveland kitchen pros cook up foodie gifts for the holidays. The second triumph involves a class of drugs that overcomes the evasive nature of tumors through engineering of patient-specific killer T cells, the body’s innate enemy of cancer. Known as “chimeric antigen receptor” or CAR therapies, these drugs have yielded unprecedented clinical efficacy in a small group of patients with certain blood-borne cancers. Both types of drugs underscore how the human immune system—and specifically killer T cells—are fully capable of recognizing and destroying even very large masses if they are educated and delivered against a tumor with compromised defenses.

As the synergy between immunotherapy drugs builds, vaccines that direct cytotoxic T cells to target cancer are the first order of business. In this area, a protein known as gp96, sometimes referred to as the immune system’s “Swiss Army Knife,”1 holds much promise. More than any other known natural immune stimulant, gp96 appears to have evolved specifically to educate killer T cells about cancer cells.

Gp96 is the carrier molecule for tumor-specific antigens that play a critical role in awakening killer T cells. The utility of gp96 as an immune stimulator stems from its unique ability to identify the full molecular fingerprint of cancer, flag tumor targets for the immune system with extraordinary efficiency, and deliver them exclusively to killer T cells. Normally ensnared within cells, gp96 can be untethered though a process that transforms it from observer to combatant. The result is a molecular warning system that heralds the presence of malevolent cells. Once injected into the body, secreted gp96 provides critical intelligence to killer T cells, teaching them how to seek and destroy cancer. In contrast, most prior and many current approaches are limited to a small array of tumor targets, require enormous doses to achieve immune stimulation, and inappropriately target the immune response that evolved to defeat bacteria—not cancer.

Cleveland kitchen pros cook up foodie gifts for the holidays

Okay, Melissa Khoury hasn't gotten to the partridge part yet. But as the young chef wrestles half of a locally grown Berkshire hog across a tabletop at Cleveland Culinary Launch and Kitchen in Midtown, she already has maple spicy bacon and smoky Tasso ham dancing in her head. She promises the exotic poultry will come later.

The kitchen, in Cleveland's Midtown, is that kind of place – where food dreams can come true. Forget Santa's elves and the wooden toy workshop. Chefs like Khoury are cooking up local food gifts and delights for holiday entertaining on the eve of what they hope will be new careers.

"I'm trying to talk my farmer into raising them," said Khoury. This strong-shouldered young woman with bright brown eyes recently quit her job as executive chef at Washington Place Bistro in Little Italy to pursue her goal of opening a specialty butcher shop.

She craves the one-on-one with customers and other chefs, remembering Mason's Meats in Medina where the butcher knew her mom by name and she got a smokie sausage as a treat.

Through her studies at Johnson and Wales University's culinary school, through stints in top restaurants in Florida, Georgia and back in Cleveland at AMP 150 with acclaimed chef Ellis Cooley, she always moved toward the knife. Exacting fish filleting, breaking down meat into fine cuts without waste – each gave her satisfaction.

Especially pork, with its rich flavors.

"The pig is a magical animal," she said, moving her little yellow ceramic knife along the chine bones.

With a Lebanese name like Khoury, you don't expect someone to have an "I Heart Swine" tattoo. Khoury admits she's addicted to vegetable-based food at Nate's Deli near West Side Market. But her family's other side migrated from the South, bringing pork-love with them.

She'd like to go in a million directions, but she's staying small, working local farmers markets under the company name Saucisson (French, usually referring to a dried sausage). The dried and cured meats will come later. In fact, the shop will come later. Right now, she's out of the starting gate, renting time at the kitchen, getting a hand lifting a 150-pound side of pork with help from another food producer at the kitchen, Clark Pope, and drawing a crowd of fellow cooks with her confident style. She just debuted her products at two local farmers markets.

What: Saucisson's changing menu of bacons, hams, terrines, etc. We tried a spicy maple bacon made with richly flavored Berkshire hog meat and a tasso, Louisiana-styled ham made from pork tenderloin. The ham had an elegant smoke and silky tenderness. She likes it in a sandwich with a mustard-based cheese she gets at The Cheese Shop at West Side Market, and serves on a brioche. We chopped up a few pieces for a bayou rice and beans salad and it elevated the entire dish with its veil of smoke and classy pork flavor.

Christmas in the Kitchen

Of all the cookbooks that have come my way this year, by far the most attractive and gift-worthy is Kenvin: An Artist’s Kitchen ($50), by the late local bohemian artist and chef Kenvin Lyman. This gorgeous coffee-table book is spiked with Lyman’s art, recipes and accounts of his life in the kitchen, on ranches and farms, and even as the designer of rock-show posters, including some for Led Zeppelin. More than merely a cookbook, it’s a life-affirming manifesto with recipes.

At the other end of the size scale, there’s the cute little Vegan Stoner Cookbook: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes to Munch, by Sarah Conrique and Graham I. Haynes ($16.99). The “vegan stoner” is a cartoon vegetable too lazy to spend more than a few minutes making vegan meals. You might have seen his/her recipes on its eponymous blog. Most of the recipes are easy, requiring six or fewer ingredients, and they all end with the admonition to “munch!”

In sharp contrast, there is also Great Meat: Classic Techniques and Award-Winning Recipes for Selecting, Cutting, and Cooking Beef, Lamb, Pork, Poultry, and Game ($24.99) by Dave Kelly, from renowned British butcher shop Ruby & White. Don’t know offal from osso buco? Then give this book a gander. Not only is this a treasure trove of information about selecting and preparing meats, but it also features recipes like those for sweetbread fritters with apple and banana puree, or chili-rubbed pork belly with chipotle sauce. It firmly answers the question “Where’s the meat?”

When you invest in high-quality kitchen knives, it’s crucial to maintain them—dull edges cause accidents. I highly recommend Wüsthof’s new Tri-Stone Sharpener ($49.99), a whetstone knife sharpener that features three different grit surfaces for optimum sharpening and honing: fine, medium and coarse. The Wüsthof sharpener, in combination with water, sharpens and hones both standard double-edge blades and sushi-style single-bevel edges. Best of all, it comes with a wooden base that holds the whetstone in place as you work your knives with the confidence and results of a cutlery professional.

I went to my brother's party later that day

The 37-year-old emptied the contents of the bag into his deep fat fryer, not realising the deceased rodent had been frozen alongside the battered langoustine tails. He has now reported the grisly find to Tesco and environmental health officials who are investigating.Mr Ali bought the 3 packet from Tesco in Bathgate on Wednesday and later that day decided to fry them up for an afternoon snack. He said: "I stuck my hand in the bag and put it in, I was in a hurry."But he noticed something was amiss when he checked the pan two minutes later. He said: "I saw something black was inside it. I think it's a matter of timing primarily, I thought 'what the hell is that?'"I fished it out and it was a mouse. I was shocked, upset and angry. I was looking forward to scampi. I love scampi."After the incident he contacted the supermarket chain and West Lothian Council's trading standards department. He said the experience has left him unable to eat anything, adding: "I've only been drinking juice, I'm starving."And he described how he has been taunted over the incident by some members of his family. He said: "I went to my brother's party later that day and as soon as I got in my brother was going, 'squeak, squeak!'

"A West Lothian Council spokesman said: "We have been contacted by a local resident regarding the alleged find of a mouse in a locally bought food product. Our environmental health officers are investigating."A Tesco spokeswoman said: "We set ourselves very high standards for the safety and quality of our food. Swansea needs to recycle an extra 7,000 tonnes a year if the council is to meet a Wales-wide target of 58% by 2016.It currently recycles 52% of what is thrown out and from 2016 will be fined 200 for every tonne under the target. The council's cabinet will decide on the limit on Tuesday and could introduce it in April."The result of limiting black bags and increasing recycling will helps the council avoid any unnecessary fines, lower waste disposal costs and improve our local environment," said cabinet member June Burtonshaw."We have a wide range of popular recycling services available for residents and the latest research shows that almost three quarters of people now put out two or less black bags."We now want to go a step further by encouraging more people to reduce their black bag waste by limiting the amount of black bags that we'll collect."However, we'll be working with residents to introduce these changes over time and we'll also take account of people's circumstances such as the size of their family and any obstacles to recycling."

Solvay Specialty Polymers describes Radel PPSU as a super-tough thermoplastic that can withstand over 1000 cycles of disinfection and steam sterilization without significant loss of properties. It is inherently flame retardant and is resistant to bases and other chemicals. The specialty engineering plastic is also compliant with ISO 10993-1 for limited exposure, non-implantable applications.A new congregation recently started gathering inside the former Temple Club in Lansing's Old Town district. Mangum stabbed Daye once in the side  It's open to the public and meets regularly, where conversations often revolve around creation and makers. But it's not what you think. The ever-evolving location at 502 E. Grand River Ave. recently found new life as a church of innovation. The Lansing Makers Network - a ragtag group of technology wizards, scientists and artists - has taken temporary refuge inside the space. Their guiding principle? Unabashed, unfiltered and unending curiosity."We provide access to tools, equipment (and) space to work," the group's founding member and board President Brian Adams said. "We have metal-working tools, woodworking tools, electronics, 3-D printers.

Anything somebody wants to make with."The group is part of a movement that holds annual Maker Faires in big cities around the world. The one in Detroit, held each July, is one of three flagship Maker Faires in the nation. And last Saturday, the Lansing Makers Network held an open house in honor of its big move.Adams greeted visitors just inside the door; next to him was a welcome sign made from the space's laser cutter. Members Mike Flaga, Jody Applegate and Tim Schmidt provided guided tours of the space and introduced visitors to different areas such as the 3-D printer and laser cutters. The Lansing Makers Network established itself as a nonprofit corporation two months after the six founding members gathered for their first meeting in January 2012. In May 2013, the Makers moved into the Temple Club where redevelopment plans for the nearly 100-year-old building had stalled. The location choice was a happy accident, Adams says. The building's owner, Alan Hooper, one of three partners behind Old Town Temple LLC, had been working with the group to find a space inside the nearby Leaseway Motorcar Transport Co. building. It took longer to pan out, so we asked for a place to use temporarily," Adams said. "(Hooper) listed a couple of places he owns and he mentioned the Temple Club, and I said, 'That's the one I want.'

The crimes, under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act are alleged to have happened at Abbeydale Close on September 9 last. The DPP consented to summary disposal of the case in the District Court.Sgt Maria O'Callaghan said gardai were called to attend the address in question, where it was alleged that Stirrat was being "threatening and intimidating to neighbours and waving a knife around".There were no injuries to anyone in relation to the incident, she said.Judge David McHugh accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at District Court level.Defence Solicitor Valerie Buckley requested a summary of the prosecution's defence and disclosure of statements.Jose Diaz-Ferrez was arrested after a Des Moines police officer found him with a knife allegedly attempting to stab witnesses about 4:10 this morning, according to the Des Moines Police report. The officer happened upon Ferrez after he heard screaming on the 300 block of E. Court Avenue. When the officer arrived Diaz-Ferrez was allegedly lunging at people with a 4-inch lock blade knife, the report said.Three witnesses said they did not know the suspect, but he attempted to stab them after they left the bar.

During the altercation, bar security came out and threatened Diaz-Ferrez with a taser to try and stop him. One witness drove her car in between the suspect and other witnesses to try and end the incident. When the officer arrived he pulled his gun out and told Diaz-Ferrez to drop the knife. That is when the suspect allegedly attempted to stab the officer. The suspect ran away from the officer, which initiated a chase before he surrendered to the officer and was arrested.According to a written statement, the bill will "protect law-abiding knife owners traveling throughout the U.S. from the vagaries of restrictive state and local laws. As long as possession of the particular knife is legal in the state where the journey starts and ends, and provided the knife is secured in accordance with KOPA, a knife owner would no longer be threatened with arrest simply for traveling from one place to another.

A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday

Bizarrely, in his trial at Preston Crown Court, Modiak claimed he had merely pretended to stab the bouncer in order to draw attention to his continuing grievance over his conviction for the acid attack. The court heard how his latest crime followed a similar pre-planned and disturbing pattern.Modiak was drunk and smoking outside a bar called Ma Kellys on March 16 this year when he was asked to move away by door staff. The pain must have been excruciating After spitting at the bouncers, he changed his clothes and put on a hat, returning in disguise an hour-and-a-half later with a large knife hidden from view. In CCTV footage, Modiak is seen walking past the entrance of the bar  sizing up his intended victim  before doubling back.He then pulls out the blade and lunges at bouncer Daniel Ursoi, 39. Speaking after yesterday's sentencing, Mr Ursoi said: "He walked up to me and shouted, 'Do you remember me?' then launched at me with the knife. I remember thinking, 'Oh God'. I was so lucky the knife missed me and just caught my sleeve."Mr Ursoi's fellow doormen held on to the the thug until police arrived.

A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say he threatened his wife with a pocketknife and kicked a police officer. The Gainesville Police Department said Michael Linkins Jr., 30, of 5801 NW 23rd St., and his wife were outside their home at 11:02 a.m. when Linkins held a pocketknife to his wife's left rib cage and told her he was going to harm her and the police as well, the police report said.A neighbor who saw Linkins told him he was going to call 911. More neighbors started gathering at the house, so Linkin left in a green Ford Explorer without a tag, the report said.About an hour and a half later, police stopped Linkins at the Home Depot on Northwest 13th Street. After being arrested, Linkins told police he had the knife open during an argument with his wife but had taken it out to cut a fishing line, the report said.Police said Linkins was handcuffed and placed in the back of the car, but he refused to put his legs in. When officers tried to pull Linkins into the vehicle, he shouldered an officer and then kicked another officer in the chest with both feet.

Far from the madding crowd of malls

This exhibition follows the blockbuster Alexander McQueen show at the Metropolitan Museum and seems designed to accommodate the same volume of crowds, although it is not as mesmerizing as the McQueen exhibition; not as persuasive in illustrating how everything from accessories to runway shows can be turned into art. Nonetheless,The pain must have been excruciating  Mr. Gaultier has contributed a great deal not only to democratizing fashion but to promoting ideas of beauty, gender, race and class that challenged mainstream mores. For this reason, it is particularly nice to encounter his subversively but exquisitely crafted objects in an art museum. The National Crafts Museum at Delhi's Pragati Maidan has been an interesting and important institute at least since the Eighties. Whether you are passionate about local art and textiles or not, this space offers authenticity in its representation of the Indian way of life that is calm and reassuring.

Far from the madding crowd of malls, the Crafts Museum has, for many decades, been a haunt only for those who light an occasional candle at the feet of indigenous craft. Also for curious foreign tourists. But even today you will find a number of Delhiites who have never set foot here. There are also those both in Delhi and outside who visit the capital frequently for work or pleasure who are simply unaware about its existence. Run by the Ministry of Textiles (MoT), government of India, and set up over the Fifties and Sixties with work continuing into the Eighties, the museum has a village complex, finely maintained and well-appointed art galleries and open spaces designed by architect Charles Correa that link ancient concepts of Indian living with modern design. Why doesn't it get footfalls then? It's an old lament but one with a new ringtone because under Ruchira Ghose, the chairperson, the Crafts Museum has in the last three years or so, been trying to stand up and walk with more strength in its arthritic knees.

The total includes $200 million to cover environmental liabilities associated with gypsum stacks, a byproduct of phosphate mining.David Dismukes, associate director of the LSU Center for Energy Studies, said both companies are focusing on what they do best.

CF Industries is more known for nitrogen-ammonia-based fertilizer while Mosaic specializes in phosphate and potash, or potassium, fertilizers, he said. The Minnesota-based company, until now primarily focused on potash, will pay $1.2 billion cash to acquire the South Pasture mine and related assets plus $200 million to fund CF's asset retirement obligation. The acquisition is expected to add approximately $0.30 per share to Mosaic's 2015 earnings per share, excluding any debt financing costs and any changes to outstanding share count, the company said. The firm, member of Canpotex  a North American group, the world's largest potash exporting said CF will contribute with 1 million tonnes a year of ammonia, a nitrogen product used in making finished phosphate products. This will allow Mosaic to abandon its plans to build a $1.1-billion ammonia manufacturing plant in Faustina, Louisiana.Potash is one of the main ingredients for making agricultural fertilizer, which is used to promote crop growth. Phosphate and nitrogen are the other two key components.

I think that tells an interesting story

"I think that tells an interesting story about children and politics," Karlan said. But when he's submitted papers to journals in the past, they've gotten one of two responses, he said."We've either been told, 'You didn't produce enough knowledge, it wasn't a clean enough test of a theory,' or that the paper isn't funny enough," Karlan said. "And personally, I was far more insulted by the second criticism." Henry Blackburn, travelling through Spain in 1864, soon learnt not to ask strangers the way. "Travellers who depend upon being told what to do and where to go at the various stations and junctions are continually being left behind," he wrote. "This is not thought much of in Spain, and amuses the officials immensely."But Concordia was the right station for Leon, despite appearances, and the daily train for the city was preparing to leave at 14.30. It was kept upstairs (as at the Gare Montparnasse in Paris, where on October 22 1895 the 08.45 from Granville ran through the buffers, sending the locomotive nosediving like a rogue bull into the street).

The afternoon was hot, but the new carriages were air-conditioned. There was a seat free on the right-hand side, which on the journey west would be the northern, shady side. Sol y sombra, sun and shade, matter in trains as well as bullrings, though railway tickets cost no more for seats in the shade. The width of the carriage accommodated only three seats across, for this was the Feve, the narrow-gauge railway. The excitement of the anomalous gauge soon wore off, but the journey to Leon was spectacular in part, and was timetabled to take 7 hours for the 208 miles, a speed of just under 28mph. As the train pulled out, an old lady crossed herself, not out of fear, but in the familiar custom of the kind of travellers who also say grace before meals. All meals are a gift; all life is a journey. Piped music flutingly moaned the melody of Moon River. In Spain, piped music is a curse to those who mind it; most Spaniards do not. As it approached Aranguren, along meandering track, the gait of the train, despite its leisurely pace, became drunken. Cows in the fields paused in their chewing of the cud and stared as it bounced, bucked, bucketed, rolled, pitched and jolted.

City from San Antonio and Orange County

Southwest's AirTran Airways unit, which it bought in 2011, continues to charge for bags. Late last year, Southwest raised the fee for checking one bag on AirTran by $5 to $25, and raised the fee for a second bag by $10 to $35. Southwest plans to eliminate those fees once it fully folds AirTran into the Southwest brand by the end of 2014.Mr. Kelly said Southwest is "right on schedule" to begin flying internationally next year. This week, Southwest filed to renew AirTran's rights to fly between several cities in the U.S. and Latin America, and to add Southwest's name to the rights. The applications suggest what Southwest's international route map could look like, including flights to Cancun from Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Baltimore, where some of the structural data was obtained Milwaukee, San Antonio and Austin, Texas. The airline also applied for rights to serve San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, from Denver, Austin and Orange County, California, and Mexico City from San Antonio and Orange County.Baggage fees and other ancillary fees have helped lift the fortunes of most U.S. airlines for the past five years. But carriers didn't need much help in the just-ended quarter.

Most soared financially, aided by relatively tame fuel prices, higher revenue and strong demand, except during the 16-day government shutdown earlier this month.More than twice as many reusable "bags for life" have been purchased from supermarkets in Wales since the introduction of a 5p minimum charge for single-use plastic bags, prompting fears that the heavier duty bags are now being used as "throwaway" items.Among the proposals in the Welsh government's new environment bill is the introduction of a minimum charge for bags for life if demand continues to rise. They are currently exempt from the 5p minimum charge rules.Ministers have suggested that the rise in sales of bags for life could be having a detrimental effect on the environment if they are being disposed of incorrectly, as the thicker gauge of plastic takes longer to degrade.Wales introduced a mandatory 5p minimum charge for single use carrier bags in October 2011.

where some of the structural data was obtained

The structure showed that this molecular machine has a built-in regulatory mechanism: it can stop itself from attaching to DNA by bending a loop in its structure to block the space the DNA would usually dock onto. The work was carried out in collaboration with Carlos Fernández-Tornero's lab at the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas in Madrid, Spain, as well as researchers at the University of ttingen, Germany and the SOLEIL synchrotron in France, where some of the structural data was obtained. Structural data was also obtained at the Petra III ring at EMBL Hamburg, on the DESY campus in Germany. A 33-year-old Racine man was arrested at his residence in the 1600 block of Holmes Avenue Tuesday, for allegedly stabbing his dog with an eight-inch-long blade after the dog bit his hand several times, according to his criminal complaint. The man, Daniel Lee Townsend, reportedly faces one count of mistreating animals and one count of disorderly conduct by use of a dangerous weapon.Police responded to the home at 10:51 p.m. Tuesday, for what they expected was civil trouble, and they reportedly found a woman living at the home crying and petting the dog and Townsend claiming that the dog had attacked him three times.

"You didn't have to stab her," the woman said, according to the police report, prompting officers to spot a wound on the dog's left hip bleeding profusely. The incident began when the Townsend and the woman were going to bed, according to the police report, and the man shoved the woman to one side of the bed, causing her to lose her balance and fall off the bed. This reportedly startled the dog to attack the man, according to the woman's statement, and she saw the dog bite Townsend and Townsend grab a fillet knife with an eight-inch blade. The woman reportedly said that she did not see if Townsend stabbed the dog before or after the incident. The woman presented the knife to police, according the report, which had the dog's blood on six inches of the blade. An officer assisted the woman in getting the dog into the woman's car so it could receive medical attention, but the report noted that the man did not assist or act with any urgency that would indicate he cared whether the dog lived or died.Police arrested the man at the residence, took him get the bite injuries checked, and then, once he was medically cleared, took him to the Racine County Jail.

If this seems a bit inconvenient

Air travel has certainly become more troublesome since 9/11. However, most travelers would agree that the new restrictions are not without cause. That said, understanding these new restrictions can be a bit problematic. For instance, are you allowed to carry a bowie knife aboard a plane? You might be surprised by the answer to that question - yes, you can. However, you'll have to follow some special rules setup by the TSA to maintain safety aboard planes. How do you go about carrying your bowie knife on the plane? First, don't put it in your carryon bag, or wear it on your belt.A whole range are available   These are sure ways to be stopped and investigated by the airport security personnel. In order to transport your knife aboard an airplane, you will need to put it in your checked baggage and leave it with the ticket desk. You should also ask whether or not sharp objects need to be declared. Firearms, ammunition and even paintball guns are required to be declared, so your knife might also. However, the news is not all bad.

The TSA does allow you to carry a bowie knife with you if it is packed in your suitcase, so long as that suitcase is checked at the ticket counter and is not a carryon item. Of course, there are a couple of further caveats to this, as well. Your knife must be securely packed, sheathed and safe.It cannot be left loose inside your suitcase, nor can you pack it without its sheath. Interestingly, the same rules apply to swords, razors and other knives. If this seems a bit inconvenient, remember, you shouldn't have any need for your knife during the flight, so packing it away before hand should be no issue. Next, you will also need to wrap the bowie knife in something - bubble wrap works well. Actually, if you can manage it, you should box your knife, wrapping and all. This will provide the utmost protection for baggage handlers and inspectors who might come into contact with your luggage and the knife itself. As long as you follow these precautions, you can carry anything in your suitcase from a bowie knife to scissors, swords and even firearms (broken down into component pieces, of course).

A whole range are available

The Ultra Light Bushcrater knife has a rather light feel, pretty much like most Mode types of knives. I think this has been accomplished by skeletonizing the handle. There are numerous various kinds of kitchen knives - chef or bread knives or even block sets. That being said, what type is ideal to suit your needs? The answer tends to be that most of them are. This sort of knife is offered in a number of sizes (anywhere from six inches to 12 inches) however, as a rule of thumb, the smaller your palm the shorter the chef's knife ought to be.When you've obtained the best chef's kitchen knife, you can begin supplementing your collection with a boning knife, a clever, a paring knife, a carving knife as well as one with a serrated knife blade.

While you might be tempted to go to the store and actually invest in a knife block collection, it may most certainly not give you the adaptability, or overall performance, that acquiring separate kitchen knives will. United States Air Crew Survival Knife

For the steadfast people who will still buy from military surplus establishments, the four most known knives are the Hollow Handle Specialized Best Survival Knife, United States Air Crew Survival Knife, the United States Marine Corps K-bar Knife, and the good old quality sheath knife. The best knives need to be efficient and versatile in an array of ways. Subsequently, the weight and bulk also needs to be taken into consideration. The best survival knives are somewhere between four and six inches. The needs of all pupils are being met A knife of this size offers a good compromise of size and control. Any blade larger than six inches tend to be an overkill, and it just adds to bulk and weight of the things you need to carry while out in the outdoors. If a larger blade is absolutely needed, it is best to bring along a machete, axe, or a tomahawk. When choosing an emergency blade, choose a knife that is constructed with one piece of metal, with material attached to it to form a handle. These type of knives are called full tang knives. In a full tang knive, a blade merges into a handle. This creates a handle that is comfortable and easy to wield. Many times, the metal part is bare to economize between weight and bulk.

A type of blade that one needs to concern themselves with, is a smooth or serrated blade. Serrated blades are more efficient for cutting up synthetic materials, flesh, and self defense. A smooth blade is the most versatile and is the recommended choice for survival situations. This type of blade is efficient at cutting, chopping, and carving. Though it may not cut through synthetic fibers like a serrated knife, the smooth blade can still be efficient. Some noted knives that are highly recommended is the Becker Knives and Fallkniven.A Bowie knife is a weapon. Although it does have utilitarian uses, as well, this knife is most well-known for being a legendary fighting blade. Like any other weapon, owning one means being responsible and exercising some common sense when carrying it. It also means knowing the local and regional laws that apply to carrying any kind of weapon. Carrying a Bowie knife in public is legal in certain states. This would mean, of course, that it's perfectly fine to walk around any city in Arizona with a Bowie strapped to one's leg, one might assume. One would be wrong.

The needs of all pupils are being met

The specialist science college has about 950 pupils, aged 11 to 16.Mr Bains, who is also governor at the school, said: "We did have one incident recently that I considered to be very serious and it went through due process."The needs of all pupils are being met."He added that the school did "its utmost to ensure the safety of all pupils and staff". Valerine Williams has a child who attends Shivers Middle School. What came as a complete surprise was to learn a weapons investigation is underway at the school."Where can you move to feel safe while your children are at school (and) while you're working and while you're doing things? Are they really safe?"District Conservator Mac Curlee declined to discuss the details of this incident, but he does say they will follow policy on it.He would not discuss whether or not an eleven-year-old child showed a knife during a physical education class Thursday morning.Curlee does say he first heard about it late Thursday.Curlee goes on to say a violation of the district's weapons policy is considered a serious, major infraction.

While officials pursue this investigation, Aberdeen Mayor Cecil Belle is quick to remind parents to remain calm."They don't need to be calling in. What they actually need to do is give the school administration an opportunity to find out the facts."Williams is anxious to find out more, but has faith in the district's leadership."I support the schools and I know some of the people there are great teachers and concerned about the kids and their safety."A courageous police officer was forced to grapple with a knife-wielding thug – after his attempts to disarm the man without a fight were unwittingly foiled by his colleagues.A large man carrying a 14-inch kitchen knife was threatening motorists in Caversham Road, Kentish Town, when Sgt Lee Stapleton arrived on the scene in April. The officer approached from behind and saw that the knife was in the man's back pocket, but just as he snuck up to grab it, his police radio started blaring.Speaking at the police commendations, Ch Insp Penny Mills said it was "the sort of thing you see in the movies".

DFAIT posted on its website Sunday

"Remain highly vigilant and avoid public places in the next 24 – 48 hours," DFAIT posted on its website Sunday.Canada does not currently have any nationwide travel warnings for Kenya, although it does have two pre-existing travel advisories for areas heavily populated by Somalis - one of which is a district of Nairobi.DFAIT warns against "non-essential travel" to the Eastleigh neighbourhood of the Kenyan capital,Burlington police are looking for a man  about eight kilometres away from Westgate Mall. The area is often referred to as "Little Mogadishu" and it's estimated 250,000 Somali immigrants, refugees and their descendants live in the neighbourhood.Reuters reported Sunday there were fears in that community there could be retaliatory attacks because of the Westgate Mall siege. In November last year, angry mobs attacked shops and businesses in Little Mogadishu after a minibus bombing, blamed on al-Shabab killed nine people. A month later five people died when a grenade went off near an Eastleigh mosque.

DFAIT has also advised Canadians against travel to areas within 150 kilometres of the border with Somalia, citing "a risk of kidnappings and attacks for issuing the advisory."That advisory covers areas in Northeasten Province, including Garissa County -where the church attacks occurred - and the Lamu district north of Pate Island.Garissa County is also home to the Dadaab refugee camp - the largest refugee camp in the world, according to UNHCR.The 21-year-old camp, made up of five settlement camps, is populated with nearly 386,000 Somali refugees who have fled violence and famine in Somalia. The 2012 church attacks that took place about 120 kilometres from Dadaab happened on the same day as four aid workers, including one from Canada, were released after three days in captivity.Several foreign tourists and aid workers have been kidnapped in the northeastern region of the country since 2011, when Kenya became involved in a multinational operation to help the Somali military combat Al-Shabab.

You will find that your claws separate easily

The lobsters will arrive with shells thoughtfully cracked ahead of time. You will find that your claws separate easily having been deftly and professionally levered just so by a heavy knife. The tails will have been halved and segregated from claws, fanned out at the southern end of the platter claws to the north. A few heads will provide impressive garnish at the center of the platter, their antennae twirling heavenwards but not all of them. Because only my wife God bless her is cool enough to dig everything out of the heads. The corn will arrive, still steaming, freshly salted, and drenched evenly with ungodly amounts of whole butter. Holders will be nearby. Please don't stab yourself as I will be displeased to interrupt my duties as maniac obsessive host in order to ferry you to the nearby hospital. At such time as the main courses are finished, and the wine has been consumed, discarded shells, lobster guts, napkins and other effluent will be quickly rolled up in the convenient newspaper tablecloth.

Rest assured that your cheese course and there will be a fing cheese course and yes, you will fing eat it has been sitting out for some time so as to be ready to be served at optimum temperature.Dessert? You're on your own. What do I look like? A fing pastry chef? It's pretty much like this every day. On those days when we have no guests, I'm tempted to wander the streets, looking for someone to kidnap whom I can subject to my cycle menu. I'm like a psychotic version of Ina Garten. But if Jeffrey isn't "sooo happy I made meatloaf," I'll bury him in a shallow grave.Tomorrow will be hamburgers! And hot dogs! Not to worry! There will be the right, the perfect potato buns. Relish. American cheese. Said cheese slices will have been pre-separated and replaced, kitty corner, in a neat stack, for easy-grab action once I'm at the grill. There will be ketchup, of course, and two types of mustard. I prefer Dijon style but as a man who respects tradition, I will also provide yellow, ballpark-style mustard.Ordinarily, I would berate guests who put ketchup on my hot dogs, or mess up my burgers with a mix of mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise but because it's summer, and I'm all about mellow I will let it pass.

What to Know About The Air Knife

The basic parts behind an air knife are the following-motor, filter, and the blower. The motor starter generates power, of which electricity if often the source. It draws in air from outside that passes through the filter before finally blown through the blades. Some air knives nowadays employ the tear-drop design to enhance velocity at a much lower energy output. Other than the blow-type, there are also compressed air knives commonly seen in large factories. The air knife had been around as early as 1950s, but back then, it was referred to as air doctor, air jet, or air blade. Its primary beneficiaries were industries that produced large volumes of textile and print papers, mainly for the purpose of eliminating contaminants and mass drying. Air doctors became an important step in the assembly line, because they ensured proper quality control, as well as contributed to the general maintenance of huge machineries that were involved in the production. With the advances in information technology, especially at the turn of the century, air knife manufacturing is invigorated once again. Mushrooming worldwide are producers of computer mother boards, silicon micro chips, and other similar hardware.

They require high precision-even customized-blower blades that can penetrate the smallest nook and cranny of IT products that are especially prone to gathering dust during production. Moving small parts to the next phase of production is also another application of air knives. That it has replaced solvent-based cleaning chemicals is perhaps the greatest benefit of the air knife. No longer is CFC chemical used in factories as cleaning agents, reducing harmful effects on the environment. Cleaning and drying of assembly line products by hand are also substantially minimized, if not eliminated altogether, with the use of air blades. People are kept safe from such hazards and their energies are channelled to the more important aspects of monitoring operations and quality. Its second greatest benefit is a natural byproduct-cost and energy savings.

The chef's knife is the utility knife

You can get a couple of websites dealing in your desired knives at affordable costs. To buy online, you need to make a transaction, and the ordered set will be delivered to you within a working week. You can get the accessories in case of any damage, or you want to change the older blade, etc. You need to be little carefully while handling these knives from direct falling on the floor may lead to breakage of the blade, and one should use a wooden made chopping board to use the knife. No matter the reason, searching for a good set of knives can be an intimidating experience. The first thing you need to be aware of are the different types of knives. Less than minutes after the second interview The chef's knife is the utility knife. It comes with a long flat blade and can be used for a number of purposes. The paring knife is slightly smaller, and is used for precise cuts. A butcher's knife is used to quickly chop meat. Some sets even include steak knives, which are ideal for a family that eats a lot of meat.

Now that you know the types of knives you need, it's important to understand a bit about the materials the blades can be made of. Variations of steel are the most common. Carbon steel is the cheapest, followed by stainless steel. If you can afford it, get a set made of high-carbon stainless steel. High-carbon stainless resists rust and corrosion and holds its edge well. You can even find blades made of ceramic material. Ceramic blades are sharp but are easily damaged. They are usually decent knives, but are easy to chip and don't stand up well to abuse. If you go with ceramic, be aware of how easy they are to damage. A little care goes a long way.Buying knives as a set instead of purchasing them individually is a good way to save money. You also get a nice knife block when you buy a set. If you have the money, buy a good set from one of the high-end brands like Henckels, Shun or CUTCO. They aren't cheap but are high quality knives that will last a lifetime as long as you take care of them. If you can't afford an entire set of good knives, you may be better off buying a few good knives instead of purchasing a low-end block set.Cheap sets are prone to breakage and dull quickly.

Less than minutes after the second interview

They also learned of Little's prior murder case and questioned him twice, on Jan.taking a DNA sample the second time. Less than 60 minutes after the second interview, after the detectives left, Little made a series of maneuvers that help lead to his undoing. He poured scalding, chemically treated water into a bucket. A co-worker walked over to check it out and saw gloves and a black ski mask inside the bucket. Little approached quickly, said "I'll take care of that," and ultimately stuffed the gloves and ski mask into the bottom of a trash can. That act was caught on a surveillance camera, played for jurors."That was very critical," prosecutor George Simms said. "That is demonstrable evidence of him doing what we argued he did: conceal critical evidence."Forensic examiners tested the glove. Little's DNA was found on the inside, and the victim's DNA was found on the outside.

A variety of tests for blood yielded both positive and negative results and were tossed out of the case. But prosecutor Robert Hill was permitted to argue that he believed a brown spot on the outside of the glove was Brockington's blood."This is a dangerous man," said Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy. "He is going to finally be held accountable for taking a human being's life."A hiking adventure is not complete without the proper survival knife. Pete Gerber knows everything about this. He designed the world famed Gerber Knives. Just a fool is going to brave the extreme conditions of mother nature without even carrying a knife. There are several types of knives on the market, from fixed blades to folding knives. One knife that you can rely on is the Bear Grylls knife. So just before spending your hard-earned bucks, ponder long and hard how you want to utilize it. For survivalists, a fixed blade is preferred over a folding knife. It's because of the folding knife's hinge.

It is rugged stuff

Grivory is, as far as I can tell, a glass impregnated polymer.  It is rugged stuff.  Some users have claimed that the grivory scales on the KA-BAR Beckers are "slicker" than the  Camillus grivory. No problem.    If you don't like the supplied scales, you can always replace them.   Becker fans are notorious for customizing and personalizing their knives. It seems to be part of the culture.Aftermarket micarta scales are  a popular upgrade for these knives, enhancing the tactical aesthetic. In a more woodsy direction,  DIY types can readily craft a wide variety of woods and laminates into handsome, serviceable grips.Like Henry Ford's Model T, you can get Becker knives in any color you want  as long as it's black.Take note that some air knives  While there are always  a few high-end exceptions, that rule basically holds true. Carbon steel can be subject to aggressive rust, hence  stock Becker blades are protected by a rugged black coating that befits these knives' utilitarian function.
Nevertheless, some Becker owners  are convinced the blades are prettier  and in some instances, more functional  minus the  factory paint job. With the grips removed, the metal can be safely stripped with any number of commercial chemical solvents.  Once bare, clean, degreased and "in the white," the steel can be protected by gun blue or alternate methods of forcing a protective patina. These finishes can be remarkably elegant, but they are still vulnerable to rust without daily diligence.

I've left my factory coating intact. The flat black epoxy has held up for eight years, albeit with some scuffage. I carefully dry it and oil it if it gets wet and never fret about moisture getting under the grip scales. The sharpened edge is usually protected by a thin film of mineral oil or petroleum jelly. The BK-7 factory sheaths tend to get a bad rap. Some folks hate them. Others think they're adequate. If you're a hater, you‘ve got options. As with the grip scales, a cottage industry of aftermarket sheath makers caters to owners who crave a custom scabbard. For what it's worth, I've never upgraded, (although I admittedly pack-stow my BK-7 more than I wear it.)  My  olive drab nylon fabric factory sheath is nothing to look at, but it has always served its purpose. Mine features a pouch that currently harbors: a pair of DMT Mini-Sharp diamond hones, a Swedish Firesteel and striker, a milsurp P-38 can opener, a Leatherman Juice Multi-tool and a nifty little Johnson Adventure Blades Piggyback. There are all kinds of possibilities.   You can let your own imagination be your guide.

How to Teach Kids About Knives

In a campground once, I heard, "Johnny, don't you ever touch this knife again. A knife will cut you and make you bleed." Another father I know gave his four-year-old son a small folding lockout knife and let him play with it. Sure enough, the kid cut himself. You may not approve of the instruction, but, both parents tried to teach something. Knowledge about knives needs to be taught in the home. When do you start? Depending on a child's maturity and ability to understand, What You Need to Know About Hunting Knife Handles  a good time is around age 5. I begin by teaching the difference between sharp and dull. I wait until we eat something that requires cutting, (steak) and I put two knives on the table. I show the child how to cut, and we begin with a dull knife. Then we switch to a sharp knife. Immediately he learns the difference. The rest of the lesson teaches him that a sharp knife will cut his finger or arm as easily as it cuts the meat. I believe that giving your kids a knife is a way of telling them that benefits and responsibility always go hand-in-hand.

The benefit is knife ownership; the responsibility is knife respect and safety. To begin, I buy a cheap knife at a swap meet or garage sale. It will receive some hard use, and the edge of the blade is sure to come back customized after the child learns that it won't cut through concrete. I prefer a Swiss Army Knife-an imitation can be had for under $10. About every third day, I introduce a new blade to the child and provide hands-on practice so that he gets an idea how it works. I start with the screwdriver blades, both flat and phi Hips. then teach the leather hole punch blade and scissors. Be careful with the leather hole punch; it's easy for the blade to collapse on fingers. Once the little person understands what sharp is and develops some fear of cutting himself, it's time to whittle. Choose a softer wood to minimize the danger of a slip. With the stick in one hand and knife in the other, he learns to cut away from-not towards his body. When he becomes accomplished enough, I teach him how to put a point on a stick. This is the basis for his first outdoor cooking lesson.

What You Need to Know About Hunting Knife Handles

An important decision that you should considered while buying a hunting knife is the grip offered by it. Wood handles are more attractive than most of the other handle materials, but are more difficult to care for. The contact cement takes just a few minutes to dry, they are then epoxied and stacked on the knife tang exactly how they were compressed the first time, clamped and let to dry. More exotic materials usually only seen on art or ceremonial knives include: Cattle bone, mammoth tooth, mammoth ivory, walrus tusk, antler (often called stag in a knife context), sheep horn, buffalo horn. The fabrication of the leather handle consists of soaking leather washers in a solution than stacking them one on top of the other on a sleeve then compressing them together with a clamp and let to dry. Hard wood is one of the most popular materials for knife handles. Hard woods like Cocobolo, Rosewood, Ebony and Bubinga are used very most often. These are one of the best choices for tough heavy duty knives. Summary Leather handles have been around a long time.

These materials will not get slick to hold onto when you are field dressing your game.Rubberized handles, due to their composition are the best grip for a hunting knife. Leather handles are normally produced by stacking leather washers on a steel shank (tang) as a sleeve surrounding tang of the knife. A light touch is advised! The use of square leather washers is for a grinding index. One most popular base materials used is a fiberglass impregnated resin called G-10. All of these materials have been used in knife handles. The grinder belt will eat leather like nothing else you have ever ground. Whatever you do, do not let a wood handle knife soak in water. These days many artificial handles are available to replace stag handles. Rubber handles like Respirine or Kraton, are used more often over plastic due because they are more durable. Some feel that it makes it hard to use. Horn and Bone Handles It creates an index to keep the roundness of the handle in proper prospect. Other types of Micarta, a composite synthetic material made of linen or paper with epoxy resin is commonly used in handle material. There are many different polymer materials available, the best among them being ABS which is a high strength polymer that can be molded very easily and kraton - a springy polymer, mostly used as a flexible inlay in the grip.

What Qualifies a Knife to Be a Bowie Knife?

Bowie knives are some of the most sought after and prized knives in the world. Their rugged good looks, impressive size and incredible durability and usability make them ideal for numerous situations, from clearing brush to personal protection. However, what actually qualifies as a Bowie knife? To answer this question, you'll have to understand a little bit about the history of this popular knife. The Gerber Bear Grylls Knife  Where did the knife get its start? What did the first versions look like? Why is this? First, it's because of the enormous popularity of these knives. Their widespread use and popularity has spawned any number of new designs and styles based off the "traditional" knife pattern. So, what qualifies a knife as a Bowie knife? The blade should be at least six inches long. It can exceed this length, though. You'll find Bowie knives with blades as long as twelve inches, or even longer. The blade should be at least one inch wide, though longer knives might be up to two inches in width. The blade should only have a single edge, running along the bottom of the edge.

These may or may not have a Spanish Notch - an area supposedly designed to trap an enemy's knife blade, but more likely used in a utilitarian manner. The tip of a Bowie knife is a special case. All knives tied to this particular heritage should have a clipped point. That is, the point of the knife should be located well below the spine of the blade and should connect with the spine via a curve that runs back toward the hilt and up to the spine. Any knife that does not have a clipped point should not be considered a Bowie knife (even though some very early versions of the original did not have this feature). The false edge of the tip can be sharpened or left blunt (sharpened edges indicate that the knife is a Sheffield Bowie). Finally, the knife should have only a single edge, though some versions with saw-teeth on the spine have been produced, based on a military design that saw use during the Vietnam war (and featured in films such as the Rambo series).
