The product needs to be labeled as made in a home kitchen

Ask for another slice of walnut or whole-wheat bread from the nearby Newtown Baking in Staunton, prime artisanal creations that the chef picks up fresh on his way in to work. When the restaurant slips, it’s in details that are easily corrected. Pastas, like one night’s stolid tortellini stuffed with cheese and tongue, need to stay in hot water longer. And for such a significant restaurant, the wine list is so brief, if you blink, you miss it. On the other hand, the bar is up-to-the-moment. Cocktails include the truly smoky rye-based SmokeHaus (ha!) and a ginger-ignited gimlet with a cap of egg white foam and lime zest, both priced to please at $11.Dessert keeps this restaurant from seeing more stars, too. There are a mere four choices, and while I enjoy parts of them, they tend to taste like incomplete thoughts. “Fried milk,” a square of pastry cream that’s been breaded and fried, is beautiful and light one visit, homely and dense another. The only reason my spoon returns to the plate, which looks like a deconstructed cup of coffee, is the espresso gelato. In another composition, dense pieces of chocolate cake are pitted against orange segments. Such partial efforts make me long for the days when more chefs fully assembled dishes before sending them out to diners.
Charlottesville and I have spent some high-quality time together in recent months. Dinner at Zinc, in a converted auto service station, is always a treat. The best weekend grazing is at the Saturday farm market, where you can find superb tacos with tortillas patted by hand. And if your tastes run to brown spirits and fried Southern comforts, the convivial Whiskey Jar downtown is where belly should meet bar.Glass Haus Kitchen is in a class of its own. Already the most exciting place to eat in Charlottesville, the young venture is poised to become an item on the punch list of restaurant enthusiasts near and far."The product needs to be labeled as made in a home kitchen and have the operator's name on it," Smail said, adding that the ingredients and permit number must be listed.Under the law, home kitchen owners are allowed to make as much as $35,000 in gross sales this year, $45,000 in gross sales in 2014 and $50,000 in gross sales in 2015 and beyond. The law assumes large operations would need to move into a commercial kitchen space with multiple employees. In the meantime, she's been busy baking cookie donations for WildCare, a wildlife rehabilitation center in San Rafael, where she volunteers once a week.

Momma's kitchen expands into attic

There is now one more place in Rawlins to buy inexpensive used clothes, toys and other household items. The owners of Momma's Kitchen at 416 W. Cedar St. expanded upward, opening Momma's Attic above their downtown restaurant on Jan. 14.Linda DeClue and her daughter Vanessa Winslow have been running Momma's Kitchen for about six months. They wanted to do something with the second floor of the building, which they are also paying for."We've been heating the upstairs, and we didn't want an empty room sitting there," DeClue said. "We thought it would help us, and help the community too."There are five rooms, each organized by type of items sold. There's an entire room for toys and other collectables. Items are inexpensive – customers can get a t-shirt for 75 cents and an adult coat for two dollars.
Walk-in donations are accepted whenever the store is open. They will also give clothes at no cost to the needy – if people don't take advantage of the service. "Families in need can stop by and talk to us," DeClue said. "Clothing, anything we have, we'll help them out."There will be a system with forms to fill out so Winslow and DeClue can keep track of whom they've given items to."We want to make sure we don't get a bunch of repeats," Winslow said. The family is not new to the business.Macon Promise Neighborhood: Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table Gears Up.They kept a room where people could rummage through donated items while they ran a grocery store and restaurant in Hanna. They still have many items they want to sell from their businesses in Hanna. "They are taking up space, and we're going to cycle them through this store," DeClue said. The plan for now is to keep things simple – make five or six dollars a day while helping people out. They will not do any remodeling, opting to keep the space as is, DeClue said."We're going to keep the rugged look," she said.
Firefighters were able to get the dog out a back door and into a fenced yard, and rescue another family dog, Erickson said. The fire, which started at the kitchen stove, had spread into cabinets and into the walls, he said. The fire was put out about 10 minutes after crews arrived and caused $100,000 in damage to the home and contents, Erickson said. When the homeowner arrived about 40 minutes after the fire was out, he told officials he likely knew what had happened, Erickson said. "He had left a pizza box on the stove and his dog was probably jumping up on the stove to get things off," Erickson said.

Macon Promise Neighborhood: Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table Gears Up

Yesterday Bibb County Commissioner Joe Allen called for a federal investigation into the Bibb Board of education's dealings with the Macon Promise Neighborhood.Several organizations across Macon came together to try to transform one local community. The Bibb County School Board committed $20 million to the cause, but there are a number of organizations already dedicating time, service, and money to the program."Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table is an outreach program, our primary program is our after school program,” says Rhonda Green-Barnes the Director of the Lane Center at Wesleyan College. "Which is run by Wesleyan College's Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service and we are located in the Anthony Homes Housing community."
Wesleyan College is one of the 25 organizations that agreed to play a role in the development of Macon Promise Neighborhood."We are expanding our program through the promise neighborhood association. We are doing our best to provide work readiness training to the parents of our after school participants," Green-Barnes adds.Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table isn't new to the area. They've been doing the after school program for twelve years. This year they have begun expanding their after-school services to the parents of the children they've served for years.Residents in Anthony Homes say it's about time this area of town got some attention. Nathaniel has lived in the area for twenty-two years and thinks Macon Promise is just the change their neighborhood needs. "I think it will be nice to have something like that in the neighborhood because the kids will have somewhere to go and something to do," he adds.
Nathaniel says the area could use a 20 million dollar injection to turn it around, "I don't think it's too much, we need more."Rhonda says investigations and scandals won't end the commitment of her organization. "We are not focusing on any negative forces right now, we are focusing on providing work readiness, getting our parents ready to go to work," she says. The Macon Promise Neighborhood has pledged to improve the education of kids and adults in some of the most distressed areas in Bibb County.I'm in desperate need of a kitchen island, but I can't build one or afford a new one. Is there a way to buy a used kitchen island cabinet with a top? Can you easily refinish the cabinet to match my existing stained cabinets? Or, is there an easier way to save time and money? --Victoria B., Racine, Wis.

Preserving the Sharpness of Your Kitchen Knives

After you have brought home a set of new kitchen knives or sharpened your present set, keeping them sharp is an important factor to cooking quickly and easily. The usual wear and tear when using your knives will dull them so use these simple tips to keep those edges sharp longer. The choice of cutting boards is an essential factor in improving the ability of your knives to hold an edge. Wooden cutting boards are the optimum choice for keeping your knives sharp. When choosing wooden cutting boards, make sure that the wood is soft so it does not affect the cutting edge. The best wooden cutting boards have the end grain facing up in a butcher block style. This style is durable but allows the knife to slide between the vertical wood fibers.
Plastic cutting boards are another option that is relatively easy on knife edges. An advantage of using plastic cutting boards is that they can be tossed into a dishwasher offering easy cleanup.Walnut City Kitchen Opens,Thai Noodle Slated for NW.Glass, marble and ceramic plates can cause your knife edges to dull so it is best to use wooden or plastic boards.Sometimes the process of cleaning your kitchen knives can result in dulling. Kitchen knives should always be cleaned by hand to maintain their quality. The heat and moisture from a dishwasher can also warp wooden handles and make your knives unfit for use. When washing your knives by hand, wash them with a mild detergent and room temperature water and avoid soaking them in the cleaning water. After the knives are washed, it's important to dry them well before keeping them in an appropriate knife holder or organizer.
Safe Storage Always use a knife block or a knife holder to store your knives. Keeping knives in a drawer can cause them to become dull because of friction with other items. Also, sharp knives can also expose you to the unnecessary risk of cutting yourself while looking through your drawers while cooking. In order to keep your knives sharp, use them only for cutting and chopping. Very often, we are tempted to use them as a pry bar or a can opener which can damage the edges of knives.High quality knives might price much more than the normal ones but within the finish, the benefit of getting them is much more advantageous. High quality knives are much more balanced therefore the danger of an injury is lower. They also last longer and enables you to cut ingredients the way they ought to be cut. The food won't appear limp and may be presented nicely when cut correctly.

Walnut City Kitchen Opens,Thai Noodle Slated for NW

Out in wine country, another new restaurant pops up: Walnut City Kitchen, a second project by Community Plate co-owners Scott Cunningham and chef Jesse Kincheloe, debuted in late December on SE Stratus Avenue. Unlike the breakfast-focused Community Plate, the spot offers hearty dinner options like cider-braised pork chops, roasted chicken, and a 1/3-pound burger. Hours of operation: 11a.m. to 3:30p.m., daily; 5p.m. to 9p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. The space once home to Limo Peruvian has a new tenant: OLCC paperwork reveals that a second location of Thai Noodle Etc. is slated to take over the 1,700-square-foot space. Co-owner Piya Promlukkano opened the first location of Thai Noodle at Beaverton's Cedar Hills shopping mall in spring 2012. More as it becomes available.
I had watched Top Chef a few times before and my last terrible vision was of these people shooting guns at the possible things they had to cook with and then they had to go skiing [in Season 9's biathlon challenge]. I was like, "Oh my God. What the f--- happened to this show that I used to love?" So I asked them, "Am I the only one coming back like a d-----bag? Will there be circus acts that we have to perform?" I just wanted to cook. They reassured me that the reason we were coming back was to make it far more culinary-driven for Season 10 and they wanted to make it more serious and stick to the food.If I were them, I'd be like, "What the f--- is this? What's that guy's problem? Why is he coming back? What does he have to prove?" All of those things. But I didn't really go there for their feelings. I'm there because I want to do well and I loved it the first time.
I had one rule from before: Just be yourself. So if you lose, at least you were yourself and you don't have any regrets and then feel like a jackass. I think that's why I was sort of pissed off when I lost with Tyler. First of all, it was a team challenge, and I'd rather go down with the food I wanted to make, but we had compromised with that burger. That's why I was so pissed off and ready to kick some ass with Last Chance Kitchen. He was really, really that bad. This is the guy who watched every episode of Top Chef since the beginning and applied to Top Chef every single year it's been on. He knows everything about every single episode and has analyzed everything. And [he] has this mental database and all of his weird ego and this sense of he missed the boat. He had cooked with all of these guys, you know? He cooked with [Anthony] Bourdain ... and then he had to deal with all of these "kids" 20 years or younger on the show. I'd probably be a surly weirdo too.But he's not really terrible. After Last Chance Kitchen, he relaxed. I like him a lot and respect him a ton. We're actually friends now because on Last Chance Kitchen there's a lot of downtime, so he and I hung out a lot, played tennis.

The Early Word on Edgar Bar & Kitchen at The Mayflower

Edgar Bar & Kitchen opened quietly over the holidays in late December. The restaurant replaces the Mayflower Hotel's beloved and historic Town & Country bar. The place emphasizes cocktails, happy hours and shareable plates rather than high-end fare and formal dining. There isn't a ton of chatter online about Edgar yet, but here's what the very first Yelpers, Tweeters and bloggers had to say about the place. The Get The Meatballs News: Says Capital Cooking's Lauren DeSantis: "Please be sure to order the Homemade Meatballs, because they are the most tender, delicate meatballs you may ever eat."The Masculine Power Lunch News: UrbanDaddy offers some power lunching advice for those who hit up Edgar. "For a business lunch with a couple G-men, you'll want to book one of the circular leather power booths or the blond wood table ringed with antique whiskey bottles, and tuck into crab cake BLTs or beer-steamed mussels."
The Incorrect Glass Selection News: Edgar has 3 stars on Yelp right now, with 7 reviews in. Alison M. isn't too hot on the place. "Was a big fan of the Town & Country, the old bar in the Mayflower. Sorry to say this is a poor replacement. Was served a gin Martini in a coupe - missed the traditional glass! Soggy potato chips and a clueless, hard to find, bartender. Tourists in sweatpants and young kids - yikes."The Classy Cocktails News: Yelp user Tiffany D. is high on Edgar's drinks. "Really high-end drinks here, made by one of those expert type bartenders that probably has a PhD in bartending from Harvard or something. Definitely a great after work happy-hour place.REAL ESTATE: Company move means 125 jobs in Riverside. The Stellar Specials News: Yelp user Amelia S. singles out Edgar's various theme nights, including free flatbread on Fridays, free champagne for ladies on Thursdays and discounted Johnny Walker Blue on Mondays. "You say free bubbles and I am totally there," she says.Whether you're a fan or a critic of a local business and the service it provides, your neighbors in Apple Valley and Rosemount care what you think. So do the local business owners who try to keep your patronage.
Patch's 'You Review It' is a chance for you to share your thoughts about a Apple Valley or Rosemount business. You can give it a rating, leave a review, and share comments with your neighbors so they know whether they should or shouldn't go.I realize Fieri has helped a lot of mom and pop restaurants get huge boosts in their business after appearing on his Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I'm sure underneath all of that Paul Dean-style jargon such as "Go Big or Go Home" encouraging diners to eat fried food there is an artery-clogged heart of gold, but his investors can't be too happy with the crap coming out of the kitchen. Or the fact that the restaurant was dead every time we passed it.

REAL ESTATE: Company move means 125 jobs in Riverside

World Kitchen, a housewares company with big-name brands like CorningWare, Pyrex, ECKO and Revere in its portfolio, has signed a lease to occupy industrial space in Riverside and expand its logistics network on the West Coast. The company's new distribution center will be at 2325 Cottonwood Ave., Riverside, and city officials say the move will generate 125 new jobs."Riverside proved to be an ideal location because it is part of inland Southern California, and is close to the Port of Long Beach," said Chris Roth, vice president of global sourcing for Rosemont-based World Kitchen. "That's important because a substantial portion of product we sell — 30 to 40 percent — comes from Asia."This new West Coast location will allow World Kitchen to optimize distribution across the West Coast, Roth said.
World Kitchen, which is relocating from a smaller distribution facility in the Mira Loma area, has already turned the key on 400,000 square feet of space. It plans to ramp up to occupy 636,000 square feet at the new Riverside facility by mid-2013."We should be functional, and be bringing products in by March," Roth said.Mayor Rusty Bailey said he believes the company picked a strategic location and will thrive in Riverside's collaborative business environment.Leasing terms with property owner Panattoni Development were not divulged, but Roth said terms were favorable and will ensure maximum efficiency with a long-term, West Coast operation. The lease was one of two the company signed through a partnership with Chicago's NAI Hiffman.Besides the Riverside lease, World Kitchen plans to spend $10 million to modernize a distribution center in Greencastle, Pa., as part of a move meant to expand the distribution range across the Mid-Atlantic, as well as the East and West coasts.
Timing was a vital component as well, Roth said.Jay Tanjuan, who represented Panattoni Development in the talks, said World Kitchen had a compressed timeline and wanted to be relocated close to an injection mold facility in Southern California. City staff helped cut through channels to meet relocation deadlines, he said.Economist John Husing said the Inland region has a clear, competitive advantage for logistics facilities because of its blue-collar workforce and base."That is vitally important to our economy," Husing said.Given the fact that Riverside's Hispanic population is now in the majority, and that 32.3 percent of all Hispanic males work in production, transportation and material-moving occupations, Husing said this is a classic case of a company moving to a locale that suits their needs, he said."These are the kinds of jobs that allow them to get to the middle class," he said.
