Staying safe on summer vacay

Summer's in full swing and if you're still planning to take a trip before it's over, you need to take some precautions in order to protect yourself while out on the road.If you aren't usually a cautious person, it may not take much for you to get duped while on vacation and out of your comfort zone, especially because most people have their guard down while they're trying to enjoy time at the beach. So while you're out and about in a place you aren't familiar with, that's the time for you to be overly cautious and keep an eye out for criminals.
Protecting your identity should always be top of mind while on vacation, but somehow the risk of public wi-fi often slips the mind of many travelers, even the savvy ones.  If you're flying somewhere and decide to use wi-fi at the airport, or a public wireless connection anywhere, be wary of what sites you're on and what sensitive personal information you look at while connected to that public network. The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport offers free wireless Internet to travelers, but warns, "The airport highly recommends that users employ standard computing safety measures. The airport does not filter, scan, monitor or block any traffic through this internet connection." That means your computer needs to have updated firewalls and updated anti-virus software to keep it protected. But even with all that, hackers still may be able to access your personal information while you're connected to an unsecure wi-fi network.
Free wi-fi connections often have lax security which makes them an identity thief's dream.Nintendo 3DS XL / LL supersizes glasses-free 3D gaming. In fact, identity thieves often pretend to be wi-fi hotspots and people end up just handing over all of their personal information. And if you're on vacation, then you're stuck there with a drained bank account and a long road home.Besides being smart about the information you access and which networks you use, there are tools available that help protect you on the Internet. There's a great tool called SurfEasy that allows you to browse the Internet and keep whatever you access private. It's a USB key that plugs into a computer and uses a type of encryption to protect your online privacy. Clark is a fan of SurfEasy and has more info on it here.If you use ATMs on vacation, be aware of what's going on around you. If you find yourself in a sketchy or dark area, head for a more crowded public place before you start taking cash out of the ATM.
