Four years for man who attacked shopkeeper with knife

A 20-YEAR-OLD who used a large kitchen knife to rob a shopkeeper of 800 to pay off a drug debt has been jailed for four years.Mathew Parry, of Armour Close, Longford, targeted Mukti's Mini Supermarket, on Pasture Lane, Padgate with an accomplice who has not been identified on Friday, January 26.Despite trying to cover up his face police officers soon recognised Parry from CCTV taken at the time of the attack.Warrington Crown Court heard on Monday how Parry had been smoking cannabis that morning and during the afternoon had begun hatching the plot to pay of his drug debt. The pair were initially planning to raid another shop but at the last minute changed their mind and walked into the shop at 7.40pm, soon after the shopkeeper had put £800 in his pocket to take to the cash and carry after work.Rob Jones, prosecuting, said: "The two men approached the front counter, both had face coverings - one had a T-shirt, the other a snood and shouted 'give us the money'."One of the males pushed over a display and they began to move around the counter and pulled out two large kitchen knives."The terrified shopkeeper handed over the money in his pocket and the pair made off. The following day after suspecting Parry officers arrived at a property on Vulcan Close, Padgate, and when arrested told them "I know I'm wanted but how did you know it was me?".Mr Jones added: "He said he could assist them in the recovery of the clothing he was wearing and the knife.

"He made full and frank admissions in interview saying he had spent the morning smoking cannabis, he spoke of pressing debt problems and it might be on way out of it."They split the 800 and three quarters paid his drug debt, the rest was spent on buying cannabis."The court heard he had a long record of minor offences but this was the most serious charge he had faced.Kitchen Dwellers, Lil' Smokies, Whitewater Ramble.Simeon Evans, defending, said Parry was aware how serious his position was despite pleading guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed weapon. He was handed a four year sentence for robbery and a further 12 weeks for breaching a suspended sentence to run consecutively.

Kitchen Dwellers, Lil' Smokies, Whitewater Ramble

The new Top Hat is, well, shiny. Soft lights gleam off polished wooden and metal surfaces in every corner of the now-spacious building. At an open house held for musicians on Friday, March 8, select Missoulians got their first look at the longtime Front Street music venue and bar, which closed in November for renovations. As Portland band Redwood Son played two sets of roots-rock, dozens of musicians mingled and chatted, grabbing complimentary beer from an ice-filled tub as servers offered platters of tapas. Even the two bouncers smiled at people walking in. "It kinda had that dive bar feeling before," says Sean Burress, a member of Polson's reggae-influenced band Off in the Woods. "Now I feel classier just being here." The revamped Top Hat is the project of Montana businessman Nick Checota, who bought it from Nicole Garr.
She took over the bar after the death of her father, longtime owner Steve Garr, in 2009. Checota says he intends for the space to become one of the premier venues in the Northwest, and one of the top 40 venues in the nation. While still very much recognizable as the Top Hat, it's certainly new and improved: Gone is the dividing wall that created a bottleneck at the front door, and the bathrooms are now in the rear hallway—two renovations that vastly opened up the room. Gone, too, are many of the hallmarks of a well-worn place for drinking and dancing, like the years of accumulated décor. Band graffiti has been painted over in the green room, which now sports leather couches. Checota's $700,000 renovation of the venue—technically two conjoined buildings, dating from the 1880s—included replacing the roofs and reinforcing the structural integrity.
He's especially proud of the work to improve the acoustics. Previously, the dividing wall in the middle of the room would echo sound back, making live music tinny and warped, he says. New sound-absorbent material on the ceiling and more open space makes for consistent acoustics and a better experience for the musicians on stage, he says. Crowd capacity is now at nearly 600 people. "There's no other room in town, of our size, that really has the level of quality sound we have,"Checota says. The building still smells slightly of fresh paint, but several shows and a grand opening event are already booked. Checota says nearly 150 musicians at the open house filled out surveys saying they'd like to play the venue. Returning patrons will find that the bar operations aren't significantly different.

Norwich soup kitchen hearing to be held Tuesday

The controversial relocation of the St. Vincent de Paul Place soup kitchen moves to the Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday for public hearings on a variance request to allow the soup kitchen and food pantry to operate in the former St. Joseph's School and a request to overturn the zoning officer's violation notice. The ZBA has moved Tuesday's 7 p.m. meeting to the Council Chambers in City Hall to accommodate the expected large crowd.St. Vincent de Paul Place filed the ZBA applications in February after the Commission on the City Plan in December denied a special permit for the soup kitchen to remain at St. Joseph's after a six-month temporary permit expired Jan. 12. The commission cited testimony by neighbors that the temporary operation was a detriment to the neighborhood, with trespassing, littering and foul language directed at homeowners.
With that denial, Zoning Enforcement Officer Tianne Curtis issued a notice of zoning violation to the facility for operating in the former school.St. Vincent and St. Joseph's Polish Roman Catholic Church, which owns the former school, initially filed a lawsuit in federal court in Bridgeport challenging the planning commission's permit denial, arguing that the soup kitchen was part of the Diocese of Norwich's religious mission and protected by the U.S. Constitution.City attorneys argued that the case should be dismissed, in part because St. Vincent at the time had not filed an appeal to the ZBA for a variance to allow the operation.Kitchen accessories: Enhance the value of your kitchen.U.S. District Court Judge Warren W. Eginton is considering the dismissal order.
Last month, Eginton postponed an injunction hearing on a request by St. Vincent to stop the city from forcing the facility to close until the court case has been decided. The city has issued violation orders, but has taken no action to force the soup kitchen to close.Amy's Kitchen ranks among the nation's top brands of natural and organic convenience foods. Its products include frozen entrees, canned soups, breakfast foods, snacks and desserts. The company projects sales this year at $380 million and employs nearly 1,900 people, including 1,000 in Sonoma County. It operates plants in Santa Rosa, near Medford, Ore., and in Corby, England.During an interview last week at their 1870s farmhouse outside Petaluma, the Berliners announced plans to build a second processing plant in Santa Rosa that one day could employ another 800 employees.City officials have applauded that news, saying it would be the biggest company expansion here in at least a decade.
